For many organizations, compute in the cloud is well understood and has become easy to implement. But for larger organizations with traditional on-prem datacenters, there is an additional challenge that comes with the legacy data that has accumulated over the years. And while the per/TB cost of storage continues to decrease, the rate of growth is outpacing the decrease in cost.

With the ubiquity of cloud storage solutions available, there is sufficient competition to drive a much lower price point which makes the cloud an attractive option for long term data storage. It also provides a stepping stone into getting your whole analytics environment prepared for the cloud.
